What is Quality Assurance?

What is Quality Assurance?

Quality assurance or QA: It is a term most people have heard of, but few will have a concrete idea of what it means. Put simply, it is a method for preventing errors, defects, and other problems from cropping up in products and services. Good quality assurance procedures will help ensure the customer receives the exact product or service they want, and to make sure it is of high quality.

For some, quality assurance procedures are often viewed as being inconvenient, or a hassle that they could do without. However, if you don’t focus on quality assurance, it could cost you a lot more than simply time and money.

The advantages of focusing on good quality assurance procedures

Mistakes can be rectified, but it is far better not to make those mistakes to begin with. This advice can be followed in every industry sector, every organisation, and every workplace. If you develop a good quality assurance routine, every part of the product development process (or service development process) will be checked and confirmed to be the best way to move forward.

Seeing QA as an early stage opportunity to prevent errors, mistakes or defects is important.

Without this QA focused routine, it would be very easy for a mistake to be made at a very early stage – and that mistake could have a serious knock-on effect on the remainder of the manufacturing or development process. A simple design flaw, a lack of quality, the creation of a product that doesn’t do what the customer wants it to do… all these things and more are possible hurdles. Yet they are also things the quality assurance process can help to identify and prevent from happening.

Quality assurance as part of an efficient management system

Since most organisations will have several key steps to go through from concept to finished product, the process of creating something new for customers to buy could involve several different departments or teams. Thus, incorporating a quality assurance procedure into a strong management system makes it far less likely mistakes will be made.

If this quality management system is also regularly audited, it makes it even less likely that quality assurance will become a problem. This is because any errors, omissions or problems will be spotted at an early stage, and improvements can be made to the system in use. There are also great opportunities to introduce continuous improvement processes based on the tried and tested Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle.

The consequences of getting quality wrong

Neglecting quality assurance could be likened to “flying by the seat of your pants”. It may be exciting, but it is far more likely to result in a crash landing – and in this case, it could prevent your product from attaining the success it deserves. It could also cost you dearly in terms of time, money, reputation and lost opportunity.
